EMDR Therapy
EMDR Therapy
Our EMDR therapists are experts and highly trained in delivering EMDR treatments. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
EMDR therapy is an innovative clinical treatment for trauma including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse, domestic violence, combat, crime, and those suffering from some other trauma-related complaints including depression, addiction, phobias and some self-esteem issues.
EMDR vs CBT for PTSD?
According to guidance from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), EMDR is one of the treatments of choice for trauma and PTSD alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
EMDR is empirically supported by an evidence base for the treatment of trauma (see below for some research references below), making it very effective in the treatment of trauma. In terms of effect, both are effective and you can see some or your results in the treatment of PTSD here.
What Happens in EMDR?
EMDR involves helping the patient to alter visual or auditory attention (i.e., shifting the focus to what is seen or what is heard) while noticing or observing negative thoughts, emotions or bodily sensations.
The intention is to unblock difficulties in informational processes allowing for rapid emotional processing of traumatic events. Therefore, trauma can be alleviated swiftly, depending on the level of severity of the issue but usually within 3-5 sessions.
