Oncology support
What is Oncology?
Oncology is the study and treatment of all types of cancer. A cancer diagnosis can have a devastating effect on a person’s life, including on those around them.
Treatments for cancer are improving day-by-day and many people recover, or are able to manage their condition, with treatment. However, the impact on lifestyle, plans and goals for the future can be challenging, and have a lasting effect on a person’s mental health.
Signs of needing support
Some of the common challenges that people can face include:
- Focusing on the possible negative outcomes and ignoring any positive news, such as positive feedback on treatment results
- Black-and-white thinking about the future
- Feeling unable to share thoughts and feelings with friends and family, with concerns about ‘burdening’ others
- Feelings of anger and blame towards themselves and others
- Coming to terms with the impacts of cancer treatments
- Reactions to physical symptoms such as insomnia, fatigue and nausea
How we can support your employee/member
Psychological interventions such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and supportive counselling can help adapt and adjust to the thoughts and feelings that result from a cancer diagnosis and treatments.
- Looking at strengths and coping behaviours
- Exploring and adapting thoughts and beliefs about illness
- Learning problems solving and coping skills for managing during challenging times
- Getting back to activities that are pleasurable and meaningful
- Where appropriate, life beyond cancer or end of life support
