How a Onebright ADHD assessment works

To be able to help you in the most positive way, we first need to fully understand your neurodevelopmental makeup and needs. Our specialist team will conduct a thorough, expert assessment to ascertain if you do, or don’t, have ADHD.

Step 1

Screening

Before recommending a diagnostic assessment, our psychology team, led by a consultant clinical psychologist, will assess your neurodevelopmental makeup and needs. If the results indicate you may have ADHD a diagnostic assessment will give you a definitive answer. We will refer you to a Onebright company, Psicon, who have been a leading provider of high quality diagnostic assessments, treatment and support for autism and ADHD for over 20 years.

Step 2

Understanding you better

Neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD are always with us, right from birth. That’s why we will ask someone who knows you well (ideally since you were young) to fill in a report form and an online screening tool. This helps us understand more about you and how you were as a child.

If you don’t have someone who can help give details don’t worry. We’ll just ask you to share as much information as you can about how you were as a child. For example, old school reports.

Step 3

Diagnostic assessment

The diagnostic assessment is carried out by either a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, who are experts in identifying ADHD in adults.

During your appointment, they will conduct a thorough clinical interview. This covers questions about how your symptoms or traits are impacting on your life at home and at work, your relationships, plus what you were like as a child.

All the information that has been gathered (both during and before the assessment) will help determine whether you do, or don’t, meet the threshold for a diagnosis of ADHD.

Step 4

Diagnostic Report

After your assessment, we’ll share a comprehensive report with you, giving a full explanation of the assessment and our findings in a clear and easy-to-understand way. It will include both our recommendations and helpful signposting for post-diagnostic support and treatment.

Step 5

Treatment and support

If the results of the assessment indicate that you have ADHD, we will go through the support options that can help and that you feel would work best for you. These can include medication and therapeutic options.

Understanding ADHD

Neurodiversity is part of being human; a fact of life for many millions of children and adults alike. Having a neurodevelopmental (ND) condition doesn’t mean you have a disease that needs to be cured, but that your neurological functions are organised differently to people who are neurotypical. It’s your unique mind.

However, neurodevelopmental differences can cause great distress when not recognised or understood. This is where the importance of adult ADHD assessments comes into play. Once fully assessed and diagnosed, we can offer tools, support and treatment to help individuals move forward with positivity, peace and productivity.

Signs of ADHD may include finding it difficult to get into a hobby or interest, struggling to reach your potential at work, challenges at home or difficulty maintaining relationships.

Frequently asked questions

Neurodiversity is a concept that embraces variations in human neurology as normal. In the past, individuals diagnosed with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and/or other specific conditions were viewed as having a “disorder,” and their traits were described using deficit-based language. The idea of neurodiversity suggests that all brains are simply different, and that having a variety of neurotypes benefits humanity as a whole.
This often depends upon how quickly we receive your pre-assessment information. Once we have received all your information, we aim to provide an assessment appointment within four to six weeks.
The assessment is carried out by either a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who are experts in identifying ADHD in people aged 18 and over.
During the assessment, they will carry out a thorough clinical interview, which covers questions about how your symptoms or traits are impacting on your life at home and work, your relationships, plus what you were like as a child.
While the assessment process and diagnostic criteria are the same across all genders, women with ADHD can present very differently. The criteria on which a diagnosis is made is largely known to be associated with symptoms in men and this can mean that women who have ADHD may go undiagnosed. Men often present their symptoms in a more obvious way, whereas women may have more subtle traits. We are very well trained in understanding the female presentation of ADHD.
