What is an Anorexia?
Anorexia Nervosa is characterised as individuals that have “a significant and persistent reduction in food intake leading to extremely low body weight; a relentless pursuit of thinness; a distortion of body image and intense fear of gaining weight; and extremely disturbed eating behaviour.
Anorexia is usually treated with talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
When to seek treatment for Anorexia
You should consider treatment for anorexia when:
You have an unusually low body mass index (BMI)
You are using misusing medications such as laxatives, diuretics, or enemas to lose weight
You are recklessly overexercising
You are missing meals, eating very little or avoiding eating any foods you see as fattening
You cannot identify what a healthy figure for yourself looks like
You have an irrational fear of weight gain
You take medicine to reduce your hunger (appetite suppressants)
Your periods stopping (in women who have not reached menopause) or not starting (in younger women and girls)
You frequently feel lightheaded or dizzy, have hair loss or dry skin
"It was clear that she listened intently to me as she was always able to go back to scenarios and issues we had previously discussed and help draw similarities between those and the present related feelings. My therapist helped me understand myself a little better and where sometimes my reactions and thought process came from."
"I very quickly felt as though I could be vulnerable and open with my therapist. Every week I had clear actions to take away and work on."
"It is a life-changing experience; to no longer feel trapped in the difficulties of my past and be able to focus on the present and my future is an indescribably wonderful gift"

What you need to know
It can be difficult for people with anorexia to recognise that they have a mental health condition. Because it’s hard for them to get out of the habits they’ve developed as a result of anorexia, recovery can take some time.
Most people with anorexia respond to treatment, and the earlier it begins, the better the chances of a complete recovery. Treatment for anorexia usually involves talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which aim to change the person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviour around food. Nutritional support is also offered to help them gain weight safely.
