Are you struggling with depression?

Feelings of being persistently unhappy, hopeless or have lost interest in things you used to enjoy. People with depression can often feel anxious or permanently low. Please remember that depression is treatable.

What is depression?

If you have depression, you are likely to feel persistently unhappy, hopeless and lose interest in things you used to enjoy. The person who is experiencing depression may feel tired, less interested in socializing with their partner, or less interested in activities that they previously enjoyed together. Depression may also cause emotional changes, such as an increase in irritability.

It impacts how we feel, think and act. Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms.  However low you are feeling now, please remember that depression is treatable.

When to seek treatment

You should consider treatment for your Depression when:
A persistent feeling of low mood or unhappiness
A sense of worthlessness and inadequacy with a loss of confidence
Feelings of guilt, anxiety and irritability
A loss of energy, general aches and pains and little motivation to do things
A loss of interest and pleasure in day-to-day activities
Loss of interest in sex and/or reduction in sex drive
A sense of hopelessness and helplessness about the future
Thoughts that are extreme, negative, self-critical and unhelpful
Difficulty being around people leading to withdrawal and isolating self
I would recommend CBT on the basis of my experience. The ability to talk things through is a powerful medium for self-improvement and overcoming depression.

What you need to know

CBT is the treatment of choice for mild to moderate depression. If symptoms of depression are severe, and medication is required, then it has a greater effect if combined with CBT. Guidelines on depression, produced by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend CBT as an effective psychological treatment to overcome depression and stay well. All our CBT Therapists are BABCP accredited therapists, so all are specifically trained to treat depression with CBT.
